COST OF LIVING
”Your money or your life.” The choice traditionally presented by the highwayman is supposed to have only one sensible answer. Money is, after all, no use to a corpse. Yet economists often study something rather like the highwayman's offer in an attempt to uncover the answer to an important question: how much is your life actually worth?
Like many awkward questions, this is one that has to be answered. Safety regulations save lives but also raise the cost of doing business, a cost we all pay through higher prices. Are they worth it? Our taxes pay for life-saving spending on road safety and fire fighting. Are they high enough, or too high?
So how much are we willing to spend to save a life? A traditional planner's approach used to be to measure the value of wages lost due to death or injury. That's dreadful: it confuses what I think my life is worth with what my boss thinks my life is worth.
So an alternative is to ask people how much they would pay for a safer car or kitchen cleaner. But such surveys do not always produce sensible results. Our answers depend on whether we're being offered a safer ?10 household cleaner and then asked if we want the more dangerous ?5 version, or whether we're offered the ?5 brand and then asked if we'll pay ?10 for the safer product. People often answer ”no” to both questions, contradicting themselves. These inconsistencies mean that we're either irrational or lying to pollsters, and perhaps both.

Being a soldier is risky; so is being a drug-dealer or prostitute. The difficulty, evidently, is to disentangle the health risk and the financial reward from all the other motivations to choose a particular way of life. That isn't easy but economists try.
World Bank economist Paul Gertler and his colleagues reckoned that Mexican prostitutes valued their lives at about $50,000 per year, based on willingness to take money not to use condoms. At five times their annual earnings, that's a similar figure to workers accepting risky jobs in rich countries.
There are anomalies. Steve Freakonomics Levitt and sociologist Sudhir Venkatesh calculated that Chicago drug dealers seemed to value their entire lives at $50,000 to $100,000 - low indeed, even for poor young men whose career choice indicates a taste for risks.
Whatever the frailties of these calculations, they are the best we have. And far from cheapening life, this sort of research often highlights just how valuable our safer, healthier modern lives really are. Kevin Murphy of the Chicago Graduate School of Business recently visited London to present his research on the value of health improvements in the US since 1970. They're vast - about $10 trillion in today's money. Looking further back, if you had to choose between the material progress of the 20th century and the improvements in health, it would be a toss-up. The health gains are as valuable as everything else put together. Encouragingly, health in most developing countries has improved faster than in rich ones, suggesting that global inequality is falling.

Solitude
I find it wholesome to be alone the greater part of the time. To be in company, even with the best, is soon wearisome and dissipating. I love to be alone. Going Back To Basics
LIKE many other seniors, Wang Ying, at Wuhan University, has been busy preparing for the postgraduate entrance exams since the new semester began. But in another way she's different. Her motivation comes not from wanting to get a master's degree to find a good job. She wants to pursue further studies because she hopes to learn more about the history and culture of her country.
Wang is majoring in Chinese traditional culture, an unusual major for college students all across the country. These majors are studying a way of life that existed thousands of years ago.
"We read articles loud together. And the teachers explain them word by word. It's quite similar to class in a private school in ancient times," says Ye Daiyin, a junior.
Wuhan established the major four years ago. The students take courses based on the classical culture of ancient China, such as literature, philosophy, and history. Their curriculum has classic works like the Four Books (Si Shu), the Five Classics (Wu Jing), the Song of Chu (Chu Ci), and Lao Zi.
There are interesting ways to study the classical culture.
Many of the students have joined the Chunying Poetry Association, which is open to anyone interested in classical poetry. They usually practise composing ancient poems.
Poetic
According to Ye, who has joined the poetry association, the members once took a thin piece of sandalwood like a piece of incense, in a classroom, and lit it. They then tried to compose a poem before the stick burned completely. It took about 20 minutes.
"It's interesting to play this kind of game. Now we can compose poems within a short time," Ye said.
The students also find challenges in their studies.
"The course was a little difficult at the beginning. The texts we use are in the original form. The characters are in their original complex form, the one used before they were simplified. And we have to read them from right to left," said Wang Ying, a senior. "It's taken me several months to get used to this."
Reciting the texts is even more challenging.
"It's our homework to recite all the parts of the Four Books, and some of the Song of Chu. It was hard for me to memorize them at first. But it got easier," Wang said.
In fact, she can now recite almost all of the "Dream of Red Mansions" (Honglou Meng) from beginning to end.
Changing majors
In fact, students majoring in Chinese traditional culture were not asked to enrol in the major based on their scores in the college entrance exams.
They transferred into it after taking exams during the second half of their first year ofstudy of other subjects.
Some of them have given up a popular majors, such as Wang. She was in law in her first year of study; others are science majors and now find themselves in a relatively new field. Ye, for example, started university life as a maths major.
And not all of them are convinced of the merits of this new course.
"The job prospects for the major are not promising. It may be hard for graduates to get well-paid jobs," said a sophomore named Song.
Motivation
But the students doing the new course have their own reasons.
"Our motivation is not money but interest. What we've learnt is far from enough. Many of us hope to pursue postgraduate studies," said Tian Fang, a junior.
The students' enthusiasm for the new major has impressed the teachers.
"It's good that they are serious about their studies. The job prospects may be uncertain for them, but they can succeed by working hard and having a good attitude," said one teacher named Xu who is in charge of the seniors.
The Perfect Dog
During summer vacations, I would volunteer at the vet’s, so I’d seen a lot of dogs. Minnie was by far the funniest-looking dog I’d ever seen. Thin curly hair barely covered her sausage-shaped body. Her bugged-out eyes always seemed surprised. And her tail looked like a rat’s tail.
She was brought to the vet to be put to sleep because her owners didn’t want her anymore. I thought Minnie had a sweet personality, though. "No one should judge her by her looks," I thought. So the vet spayed her and gave her the necessary shots. Finally, I advertised Minnie in the local paper: "Funny-looking dog, well behaved, needs loving family."
When a young man called, I warned him that Minnie was strange looking. The boy on the phone told me that his grandfather’s sixteen-year-old dog had just died. They wanted Minnie no matter what. I gave Minnie a good bath and fluffed up what was left of her scraggly hair. Then we waited for them to arrive.
At last, an old car drove up in front of the vet’s. Two kids raced to the door. They scooped Minnie into their arms and rushed her out to their grandfather, who was waiting in the car. I hurried behind them to see his reaction to Minnie.
Inside the car, the grandfather cradled Minnie in his arms and stroked her soft hair. She licked his face. Her rattail wagged around so quickly that it looked like it might fly off her body. It was love at first lick.
"She’s perfect!" the old man exclaimed.
I was thankful that Minnie had found the good home that she deserved.
That’s when I saw that the grandfather’s eyes were a milky white color - he was blind.
